Obstacle – In one place too long

Woman with boy. She texts. He stands. She holds him. He looks. She coddles his head, he looks sideways.

Woman stands tall when talking about her homeland. Chin tilts up. A shake of the head.

Man grins to show a tooth missing. Digs out the cig quick with his toe while stirring smoke in his mouth.

Woman darts her head with her eyes. Sees something out of the corner of her eye. Double takes. Four times.

Girl holds her hair sideways, while her friend tilts her head. Hugging at a slant, they laugh!

When he puts his arm around her, he seems taller. Her blood rushes to her face, eyebrows go up. She relaxes soon. When he’s alone, his gaze pierces. When she’s alone, her lip trembles.

This man brings everything to the moment. And no matter how much it weighs, he can carry it, hold it as long as you please. When he leaves, he takes things one at a time.

He watches for a long time, nods when asked, stands very still and looks at you. Then he disappears.

When she talks she laughs. Her face tilts just so, and just so, and just so. When her friend smiles, clouds disperse. Together, moon and sun.

Young man’s shoulder ticks, smiles like swallows – the bird kind.

He rushes in.

Child’s face covered in chocolate. She licks and licks. Mum gathers her up and joins her.

Like black ink on a fat pointed brush, she hesitates a moment, dives in and lands.

She presents all sides of herself one facet at a time.
